Probably more of a bhaji than a burger (the main role of the egg is to bind the patties together), you can have these mild using Piccalilli or spice them up with Calder’s Kitchen hotter Chillililli or Sillylilli for a real kick.

A very early creation from Calder’s Kitchen and a firm favourite with customers.

Prep time 10 minutes, cooking time 5 minutes, serves 1

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 small or medium egg

  • 30g porridge oats

  • 20g grated Cheddar cheese

  • ¼ of a finely sliced onion 

  • optional additions – diced black olives, finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes, or if you eat meat, bacon lardons or chopped chorizo)

  • 1 desert spoon of Calder’s Kitchen Piccalilli / Chillililli / Sillylilli 

  • Salt and black pepper A little cooking oil for frying

METHOD

  1. Place the oats, cheese, onion, and salt and pepper into a mixing bowl and stir well

  2. Add the Calder’s Kitchen Piccalilli and the egg and stir the mixture to combine everything together

  3. Heat the oil in a frying pan then add the egg mixture and shape into a round or square shape (note a small mould, the size of a standard burger/bun is useful) 

  4. Fry on a low to medium heat until the burger is firm enough to turn over without breaking up then flip onto the other side and continue to cook until the egg has set throughout the burger

  5. Serve in a round bun or sliced bread of choice
